Google checks all applications in PlayMarket for viruses and hidden malicious features. But if you are trying to install an application on your smartphone that has been downloaded from a third-party source as an APK file, then you cannot rely on this protection. Fortunately, there are other security systems on the web.
Before you run any APK file downloaded from the network on your smartphone, we strongly recommend that you check it with a scanner MetaDefender Cloud. This is a free tool that runs the application through the databases of 40 antiviruses at the same time.
To check the APK file, you need to upload it to the server by clicking on the paperclip icon (file attachment) in the search bar of the service, and then click the “Process” button. The service scans the file in seconds and shows the results of each antivirus involved, metadata and application rights.
MetaDefender is convenient because it does not require installation, and it can be accessed, including from a smartphone. The only disadvantage of this service is that it only allows you to scan files up to 140 MB. However, this should be sufficient for the vast majority of existing applications. MetaDefender Cloud also allows you to check for security not only files, but also websites, domains, IP addresses or hashes.
All in all, this is an amazingly useful tool that we recommend bookmarking for anyone who cares about security and digital hygiene.
